This list of projects is NOT all-inclusive. If the project you are considering is not listed, contact your local building inspector prior to commencement to verify if a permit is needed.
Any new structure, except accessory structures, such as new homes, commercial buildings, duplexes, multifamily, etc.
Any change to an existing structure's footprint and/or envelop such as roof pitch changes, room expansions, screen rooms, covered porches, etc.
Changes to the structure which do not increase the structure's footprint or envelop but rather change the exterior fascade.
Changes to the structure which do not increase the structure's footprint or envelop but rather only rearrange or improve existing interior space.
Conversion of non-habitated space (i.e. space used for storage or mechanical equipment) into habitable space (i.e. living space).
(including barns, detached garages, sheds) All buildings which are secondary in use to the primary structure like a home.
An uncovered structure, meaning it has no roof, which serves any exit of a building.
Both above ground and in-ground pools.
Both above ground and in-ground hot tubs.
New driveways, culverts, and sidewalks. Existing driveways which are to be paved. Changes to size or location of existing driveways.
All grade changes which create extreme slopes or mechanical retaining with ties, stones, etc.
Strictly removal and replacement, or installation of an additional layer, of roofing materials. Rotted structural members needing repair may require additional permits. See Structural Repairs for more information.
New fences, replacement fences, and fence repairs.
New exterior siding, masonry veneer, stucco, etc.
New electrical services and electrical service upgrades.
All new waste and vent, including pipe replacement, pipe reconfiguration and relocation of any plumbing fixtures.
All replacement furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, and any other equipment which provides heating and/or cooling for the structure.
All replacement water heaters, regardless of type.
True replacement windows which utilize the existing opening without any modification. Windows which require opening modifications should see Structural Repairs.
Any modification to a structural member or bearing wall. Examples include foundations, headers, rafters, joists, etc.
Modifications to non-structural members. Examples include drywall repair, patching, painting, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, etc.
Complete demolition of a structure regardless of intent to re-build.
All signage including but not limited to ground, post, monument, window, and wall.
Any new or replacement circuits to an existing electrical system. Electric panel replacement. Relocated or added openings.
All new gas and solid-fuel fireplaces or stoves. Please note: Ventless fireplaces are NOT approved in the State of Wisconsin.
